Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

Blizzard Entertainment enchants us with a wonderful, well-designed, and adrenaline-filled action free-to-play online collectible card video game. The game uses the graphic and characters from the existing Warcraft series and was developed for the most popular platforms: Microsoft Windows, MAC OS, and mobile ones (iOS and Android).  The cool thing is that the game allows for cross-platform play which means players can team up, regardless of the platform they use.

At the base, Hearthstone is a turn-based card game with two players, each having a deck of thirty cards. Besides this, each player has some other advantages such as minions and spells, designed to weaken the opponent’s defense.  You should also know that you have to work your way up to a good deck of cards. Each game you win will bring new and better cards so you can upgrade the initial deck.

The Gameplay

Hearthstone can be played in two modes: player versus player or player versus computer. In the beginning, your deck of cards is standard and you get some predefined choices. The main goal of the game is to reduce your opponent’s health to zero before your opponent does the same to you. This implies a bit of strategy since you should know which cards or spells to play or when to unleash your minions in order to produce the most damage.

Another goal in Hearthstone is to upgrade your collection of cards by winning as many games as possible. Of course, there’s also the possibility to purchase cards (the game is freemium), but if you can save your money, why would you go with this version?

To make sure everyone has equal chances, regardless of experience, Blizzard introduced two styles of gameplay: Standard and Wild. In the Standard style, you only have access to a basic set of cards and the ones added in the most recent expansion. In the Wild game style, any card can be used so more advanced players will have the upper hand.

A bit about modes and other events

The available game modes are quite important, especially for someone who doesn’t know the game so we’ll describe some of the available features in more detail. For instance, in the standard Play mode users have the possibility to challenge other players or to play with the computer in casual matches.

There is also an Arena mode where the user has the possibility to randomly select cards until he/she reaches 13 cards. Once the deck is complete, they can challenge other players and the winner gets interesting rewards. In this mode it’s important to avoid losing three times in a row to stay in the race.

Blizzard Entertainment is quite active when it comes to keeping players interested and they offer various challenges that make Hearthstone more diverse. Thus, these challenges, called Tavern Brawls, change weekly and offer as rewards unique cards, heroes, and other in-game rewards. So, if you feel your deck is quite low, make sure to complete the weekly challenge.

To make things even more interesting, there are three quests (randomly selected) which can only be played in Play or Arena modes. These quests are played against human opponents and the winner gets rich rewards like gold or cards. The fun part is that a new quest is added every day so you won’t get bored playing the same thing over and over.

A fun game worth trying

We honestly enjoyed playing Hearthstone and, if you like games that make you think by pitching interesting challenges, you should give it a try as well. The graphic is amazing and the movement is extremely smooth so you won’t even feel you’re playing a mobile game.
